The Company started by developing a simple form of automatic machine for expanding conical paint cans.
The development continued with a modern type of AFMK. Parallel with the AFMK machine a 3-station machine AFMR for rectangular cans was developed.
In this machine one of the stations was equipped with a mandrel on which it was possible to orientate the can and find the seam. The machines were pneumatically controlled. The rotation of the can was made with an air motor and the seam was mechanically found.
To meet the demands of the market when it comes to production speed the AFMK and AFMR machines were made double.
By this time we also developed machines witch was able to expand cans with panels. The well known AFMRP machines.
On request from customers we started to produce magnetic conveyors to transport the cans between the machines. By this time and along we also developed a lot of special machines on customer’s request.
This is the time when the company takes a big step forward in the development, the machines for expanded cans will from now on be equipped with an electronically control. Before this the machines were pneumatically controlled. By this time the seam detection system was changed from being driven with an air motor and a mechanical detection of the seam, to be driven with a stepping motor and an optical detection of the seam. This new system made it easy to adjust the position of the seam.
The demand from the market to increase the speed of the machines made us to develop the SFM machine. This machine was build on a complete new system where the idea was to reduce the number of moves which were unproductive. By the SFM machine we managed to reduce the unproductive moves from three (3) to just one (1).
Compared with the old AFMR machines we increased the speed with more than 50 % using the same number of tools. The average speed of the new SFM-1 was 120 cpm compared with the double AFMR witch reached not more than 75 cpm.
To meet the market, a new step in the development was taken by going from stepping motors to servomotors, to make motors smaller and stronger.
A new step in the development of the SFM machine range was taken by developing a new in-feeding system. The pneumatically driven in-feeding system was replaced by a chain driven in-feeding system. The chain was driven by a servo motor.
By replacing the pneumatic cylinder and the shock absorbers, with the chain the vibrations in the machine were reduced. Therefore it was possible to increase the speed of the in feed of the can to the turret.
This system made it also possible to adjust the position of the can in the turret.
By this time we also changed the PLC system to a new and faster one. This together with a new outlet of the machine made it possible to increase the speed of the machine with another 25 % to about 150 cpm. The speed of the machine is always depending on the shape and the height of the can. With a rectangular shape you can always run fastest. By this form you don’t have to wait until the tool is completely together before you remove the can from the tool.
During the last years Bertil Ohlsson has gone towards more and more advanced forms in expanded cans. An interesting new direction for expanded cans is formed aerosol cans.
